US citizens need a visa. The standard route is the Vietnam e-visa from the official portal: up to 90 days, single or multiple entry. The only exception is a stay of up to 30 days on Phu Quoc island.

How to apply for the Vietnam e-visa
- Go to the official portal https://evisa.gov.vn/ (other sites are paid intermediaries).
- Choose 'Apply for e-Visa'; prepare a scan of your passport data page and a front-facing portrait photo (no glasses).
- Fill in the form in Latin letters: passport data, entry/exit dates, single or multiple entry, entry and exit border gates.
- Make sure your passport is valid at least 30 days beyond the e-visa end date (portal rule) — US State Dept advises 6 months validity on arrival.
- Pay the fee by card on the portal: USD 25 (single entry) or USD 50 (multiple entry); non-refundable if refused.
- Save your registration code and check status on the portal (usually 3–5 working days).
- Download and print the e-visa; enter and exit only through the border gates stated on it.
