Winter in Russia is the best time to fly off to warm Asia, but "warm" doesn't mean "dry" everywhere at once. Regions run on their own seasons, and the difference between a great destination and a rainy one can be a couple of flight hours. Below is a rough map by month.
The general logic of the winter season
Broadly speaking, November–March is the dry, comfortable season for southern Thailand (the Andaman coast), Sri Lanka's west coast and the UAE. Central and southern Vietnam behave differently from each other, and the start of the period can still catch the tail end of the rains in some places. A closer look by destination
Thailand, south
The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) usually has its best dry-season stretch in December–February: sunshine, calm seas, and high visitor numbers. November and March, at the edges, are slightly less stable but are still comfortable more often than not.
Vietnam
The south (Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc) is mostly dry and warm in winter. The centre (Da Nang, Hoi An), however, often catches rain early in the period, settling down closer to January–March.
Sri Lanka and Bali
- Sri Lanka: the west and south coasts are usually at their best in December–March.
- Bali: winter is the wet season, so short downpours are possible, but windows of good weather do occur.
- UAE: winter is the most comfortable period, as the heat eases off.
