Bali for Russian travellers: complete guide

A trip to Bali for Russian travellers in 2026 doesn't require a visa arranged in advance: on arrival you get a visa on arrival (VOA) or its e-VOA equivalent for 30 days, but you must complete a free online declaration before you travel. Unlike Thailand and Vietnam, Bali has a direct flight from Russia. Below we cover visas and entry, getting there, seasons by area, money, where to stay, what's off-limits, and staying connected. For the bigger picture, see our Bali overview.

Visas and entry: what to know

Russian citizens need a visa to enter Bali — there's no full visa waiver between Russia and Indonesia yet, although talks are under way (see our piece on visa-free plans with Indonesia, which also has no confirmed date). The simplest option is a visa on arrival (VOA) or its electronic equivalent, e-VOA: valid for a 30-day stay, priced at IDR 500,000 (roughly $32–35), according to the official portal evisa.imigrasi.go.id. This visa can be extended for another 30 days for the same fee at a local immigration office. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs' consular information on Indonesia also lists a visa on arrival priced at $35 for 30 days — see kdmid.ru. There's also an alternative route — a C1-type (tourist) visa through the Indonesian consulate in Moscow, which differs in cost and process from the VOA/e-VOA, so check the current terms with the Indonesian Embassy in Moscow before you travel. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your departure date.

The All Indonesia online declaration

Since 18 August 2025, entering Indonesia requires a mandatory online declaration via the All Indonesia app or portal — complete it before boarding or right after you land. According to kdmid.ru, there are no mandatory vaccinations for entry, confirmed by Moscow's Institute of Tropical Medicine, but it's worth checking current requirements before you travel.

Getting there from Russia

Unlike Thailand and Vietnam, Bali has a direct scheduled flight from Russia: Aeroflot operates flight SU296 from Moscow (Sheremetyevo) to Denpasar on a wide-body Airbus A350, three times a week. Flight time is around 12 hours 25 minutes. This is a guide for October 2026 — check current schedules and availability on aeroflot.ru. The alternative is a connecting flight via the UAE, Qatar or Singapore: longer, but sometimes cheaper. For an honest way to calculate real travel time on connecting routes, see our guide to direct and connecting flights to Asia.

When to go: seasons by area

In the south and west of the island (Canggu, Seminyak, Uluwatu), the dry season runs from April to October; in the north and east (Amed, Lovina), the weather cycle shifts and tends to be drier more often. For a detailed month-by-month and area-by-area breakdown, see Bali: when to fly and where to go — here's just a general guide.

Best time to go, by area of Bali

PeriodSouth and west (Canggu, Uluwatu, Seminyak)North and east (Amed, Lovina)
April–OctoberDry season, high tourist seasonSlightly more humid but generally comfortable
November–MarchRainy season, short afternoon downpoursRelatively drier thanks to the island's terrain

Money: exchange rates, cards, cash

Mir cards aren't accepted in Bali — there's no confirmed acceptance network. Plan to travel with cash Indonesian rupiah and a foreign-issued Visa or Mastercard, not a Russian bank card. This is current as of 2026, but the situation can change — check before you travel. For a fuller breakdown of payment options across the region, see our guide to money in Asia.

Where to stay: areas of Bali

Canggu — surf, cafés and digital nomads; Seminyak — beaches and shopping; Ubud — culture, rice terraces and mountains; Uluwatu — cliffs and surf, but pricier; Sanur and Nusa Dua — a calmer pace, good for families with children. For a detailed breakdown of areas for a first trip, see Bali for the first time: the areas worth flying for, and for how to pick a hotel without overpaying, see Bali hotels without overpaying.

What not to do: laws and local rules

Temple visits require a sarong and covered shoulders and knees; local custom holds that you shouldn't position yourself higher than a priest's head during ceremonies. Indonesia's drug laws are among the strictest in the world. Once a year the island marks a Day of Silence (Nyepi) — the island shuts down for 24 hours, usually in March; exact dates change year to year, so check before planning your trip.

Staying connected

It's simplest to set up an eSIM before you fly, so you don't need to hunt for a phone shop at the airport right after a long flight. For what to choose for Bali and nearby destinations, see our eSIM guide for Asia.
