Turkey in winter: sea, thermal springs and city
While everyone waits for summer, winter Turkey offers warm Antalya, steaming thermal springs and Istanbul without the crowds — and all of it noticeably cheaper.

Winter Turkey isn't a beach holiday in the classic sense, and that's exactly its charm. While the coast enjoys +15…+20 °C, mimosa and citrus in bloom, flights and hotels cost one and a half to two times less than in summer. You stroll along the promenade in a light down jacket, and in the evening warm up in an open-air thermal pool. Perfect for anyone tired of the rush who wants to reset without exhausting heat.
It's worth going if you love unhurried walks, spa and hammam, atmospheric cities and nature without the summer queues. It isn't for you if you're coming specifically to swim in the sea: the water is chilly in winter, a quick dip at best for the hardiest. Indoor thermal and spa pools, though, are open all year round.
Antalya and the coast: a mild climate and empty promenades
Antalya in winter is the most comfortable of the "warm" options. The old town of Kaleiçi with its narrow streets and harbour views is especially good without the summer crowds. Take a trip to the Düden waterfalls, ride the cable car up Tünektepe, walk through the clifftop parks. Many five-star hotels keep heated indoor pools and full spa complexes running through winter — you can pick a hotel just for that.
- Walks around Kaleiçi and the old harbour with no queues
- Indoor thermal pools and a hammam in coastal hotels
- The Düden and Kurşunlu waterfalls — beautiful even in winter
- Hotel prices 1.5–2 times lower than in summer
Pamukkale and the thermal springs
The snow-white travertines of Pamukkale look especially striking in winter, and the warm mineral water in them is a real rescue on a cool day. Next to them is Cleopatra's Pool with ancient columns right in the water: swimming among marble fragments in +35 °C water when the air is +12 °C is unforgettable. There are also thermal resorts around Yalova, Afyon and Bursa — people often go there specifically for health and spa.
Winter Turkey teaches you something simple: warmth isn't about the weather outside, it's about steam over a spring and a glass of tea after the hammam.
Istanbul: a city without the crowds
Istanbul is good in any season, but especially in winter: the queues for Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern are shorter, the cafés cosier, and if you're lucky enough to catch snow on the mosque domes, those are postcard shots. Warm up in a historic hammam, lose yourself shopping in the Grand Bazaar (leather, textiles, spices, jewellery), take a Bosphorus ferry with tea and a simit. Dress in layers: it can be windy and damp, +5 to +10 °C.
Build the route around your mood: a week can look like a couple of days in Istanbul for the city and shopping, then a flight to Antalya for warmth and spa, with a side trip to Pamukkale. Domestic flights in Turkey are cheap and frequent — combining regions is easy.
Frequently asked questions
Can you swim in the sea in winter?
In the open sea — only if you're very hardy, the water is around +16 to +18 °C. But heated indoor and thermal pools in hotels run all year round, so you'll get your swim either way.
What clothes should I pack?
The layering principle: a T-shirt, a jumper, a light down jacket or warm coat, a scarf, comfortable waterproof shoes and a folding umbrella. It's warm in the sun during the day, cool and windy in the evening and in Istanbul.
Who will definitely love winter Turkey?
Fans of spa and hammam, quiet walks, atmospheric cities and crowd-free shopping. And anyone who wants warmth and a change of scenery but can't handle summer heat.
