Egypt, the UAE or Thailand: where to fly in winter

In winter most people want the same thing: sun, sea and minimal risk. That's why the top of the list always holds the same three names — Egypt, the UAE and Thailand. Except they aren't "the same thing at different prices", they're three fundamentally different scenarios. And people are most often disappointed precisely because they picked the wrong format for their style of holiday.

In short: Egypt — is "quick and simple": a hotel, the sea and a reef. The UAE — "comfort and city": walks, service, wow locations plus a beach. Thailand — an "island vibe": nature, food, excursions and the feeling of summer. Seasonally the guidance is: Egypt is most comfortable from October to April, in Dubai winter is the golden time for being outdoors (November averages around 27 °C), and in many regions of Thailand the best period is November–February.

Three scenarios people most often get wrong

"I just want the sea and to switch my head off." Egypt works best: most activities are already built into the hotel and the sea is right there. One important nuance — winter can be windy, so if you don't like exposed beaches, choose bays and read reviews specifically about wind and waves.

"I want comfort, beauty and things to do." Take the UAE. In winter it's lovely for walking and the entertainment never runs out: promenades, shows, parks, restaurants. A good mini route idea is 4–5 days in Dubai plus a day in Abu Dhabi: a change of scenery without survival-mode transfers.

"I want it like in a film: palms, fruit, islands and freedom." That's Thailand. In season it's easier to catch stable weather, and the holiday is easy to build around yourself: beach, markets, island tours. But bear in mind: Thailand suits people who like to move a little rather than sit in one hotel for all seven days.

What you get, and where expectations break

• Egypt: sea and sun in a comfortable season, reefs and snorkelling as the main wow effect, the quick "land and relax" format. Base yourself in Hurghada (family-friendly, a wide choice of hotels) or Sharm el-Sheikh (reefs and bays).
• The UAE: maximum service and convenience, city impressions plus a beach, the ideal "not only the sea" option. Abu Dhabi and quieter districts are calmer.
• Thailand: islands, nature and beaches, food and markets, a "sea plus experiences" combination. Bases — Phuket and Krabi.

Thailand's main trap is expecting "all-inclusive like in Egypt". Here a different combination works better: a good hotel plus eating outside it plus trips. And the sun is treacherous: SPF is a must even "in winter". In Egypt, meanwhile, a light windbreaker for the evening and reef shoes will serve you well.

It isn't the country that disappoints but the wrongly chosen scenario: people expect Egyptian all-inclusive in Thailand, and Thai freedom of movement in Egypt.

A checklist before you book

So your holiday doesn't start with surprises, run through a short list before paying. Entry rules and visa requirements change, so check them for your own passport and route — the most reliable single source is the IATA Travel Centre.

Then the standard but critical parts: make sure your passport meets the country's validity requirements; take proper insurance if you're planning water and active pursuits; and keep your money on a "main plus reserve" scheme — a second card or cash. The bottom line is simple: the sea, simply and quickly — Egypt; comfort, city and a wow picture — the UAE; islands, nature and freedom — Thailand.
