Sri Lanka for Russian travellers got noticeably easier to reach in 2026: since 25 May 2026 the island is on the list of 40 nationalities with a free 30-day ETA, there's a direct flight from Moscow, and Mir cards still don't work on the island. Below we cover visas and entry, getting there, seasons, money, where to stay, what's off-limits, and staying connected. For the bigger picture, see our Sri Lanka overview.
Visas and entry: the free ETA since 2026
Since 25 May 2026, Sri Lanka has added Russia to the list of 40 nationalities that receive a free Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), according to the official portal eta.gov.lk. The free tourist ETA allows a stay of up to 30 days with two entries. The date and the list of nationalities are independently confirmed by the industry outlet VisasNews. Before this change, the ETA for Russian citizens carried a fee — dropping it is a meaningful simplification for tourist trips to the island.
How to apply for the ETA
Apply only through the official eta.gov.lk portal, 3 to 5 days ahead of your trip. Third-party sites charge for filling in the same form, even though the official application is free for nationalities on the free-ETA list — stick to the government domain and double-check the address before entering your passport details.
Passport validity
The minimum required remaining passport validity changes from time to time, so we won't quote an exact figure here: before booking flights, check the current requirement on eta.gov.lk or the Sri Lankan embassy's website.
Getting there from Russia
Unlike many Asian destinations, Sri Lanka has a direct flight: according to airline and aggregator data (such as BiletyPlus and FellowTraveler), the Moscow–Colombo route flies a Boeing 777-300, departing Sheremetyevo in the evening, with a flight time of roughly 8.5–9 hours. The flight isn't daily and is partly seasonal, so check the schedule and seat availability in advance, especially if your trip is tied to fixed dates. Other routes connect via the UAE, Qatar or India and take noticeably longer, mostly because of layover time. For an honest way to calculate real travel time with a connection, see our guide to direct and connecting flights to Asia.
When to go: season and weather
Sri Lanka has two monsoons, and they run in opposite phases: the west and south coasts (Unawatuna, Mirissa, Weligama, Bentota) are drier and more comfortable from December to March, while the east and north-east (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) are better from May to September. That means the island has no fully "closed" season — you just need to pick the coast that matches your travel dates. For the wider pattern across the region, see our guide to Asia's monsoons.
Best time to go, by coast and season
| Coast | Dry season | Rainy season |
|---|---|---|
| West and south (Unawatuna, Mirissa, Bentota) | December–March | May–September |
| East and north-east (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) | May–September | October–December |
Money: cards, cash, rupees
Mir cards don't work in Sri Lanka: talks on connecting the card to the island have stalled. You can pay with a foreign Visa or Mastercard not issued in Russia (for example, by a bank in Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan), or with UnionPay. Cash rupees are easiest to withdraw from major-bank ATMs — Commercial Bank and HSBC accept foreign, non-Russian cards — but it's worth keeping a small cash buffer in case an ATM declines your card. For a fuller breakdown of payment options in the region, see our guide to money in Asia; we don't quote exact exchange rates here — treat any figure as a rough guide and check it before you travel.
Where to stay: Sri Lanka's resort towns
Unawatuna is a reef-protected beach with calm water, popular with package tourists and beginner surfers. Mirissa is a larger beach with bigger waves, known for whale watching. Weligama has beginner-friendly surf spots and the island's famous stilt fishermen. Bentota is pricier and quieter, with an Ayurveda-resort feel. Negombo sits just 37 km from Colombo airport, handy for a short stopover before a flight out or right after landing. If you want more than a beach, see our route through Sri Lanka's tea country.
Sri Lanka's resort towns: who they suit
| Resort town | Who it suits |
|---|---|
| Unawatuna | Relaxed beach holidays, package tours |
| Mirissa | Whale watching, wide beach |
| Weligama | Beginner surfing |
| Bentota | Ayurveda, higher service level |
| Negombo | Short stopover near the airport |
What not to do: laws and fines for tourists
Buddha statues in Sri Lanka aren't a photo backdrop: don't turn your back to them, climb on them, or pose hugging them — this is fined, and in serious cases can lead to deportation or arrest. Temples require covered shoulders and knees, and shoes must come off before entering. Tattoos with religious imagery — Buddha figures or the Om symbol — are banned. Collecting wild plants or catching animals is also punishable by a fine or a prison term. Exact sums and legal wording change, so check the Sri Lankan embassy's website before you travel.
Staying connected
It's easier to set up an eSIM before you fly rather than queue at a connectivity desk at Colombo airport after a long flight. For what to choose for Sri Lanka and nearby destinations, see our eSIM guide for Asia.
